At Sussex we recognise that mathematics is the foundation of the physical sciences. It plays a major role in the life sciences and in such disciplines as economics, computer science and psychology.
Employers value numeracy, clarity of thought and the capacity for logical argument that the study of mathematics develops.
Mathematics is flourishing; more research has been published in the past 20 years than in the previous 200, and celebrated mathematical problems which had defeated strenuous attempts to settle them have recently been solved.
New areas such as chaos and fractals, knots and braids, and interacting particle systems are the subject of intensive study; these areas will in their turn give way to fresh developments.
BSc and MMath in Mathematics
At Sussex we offer BSc and MMath degrees. The extra year of the MMath degree gives the opportunity to study mathematics in greater depth and is intended for students who wish to pursue mathematics research or to use mathematics extensively in their careers. The first two years of the BSc and MMath are common, so you do not need to decide between the two initially. If you are undecided, apply for the MMath to ensure that student loans are available for the whole of your degree. A final choice does not have to be made until the end of the second year.
Mathematics with a minor
As an alternative to straight maths, you can take a degree with a minor. These degrees will appeal if you wish to study another subject alongside mathematics eg Mathematics with Economics. A full list of programmes and entry requirements can be found in the Undergraduate Prospectus.
BSc (4 years) Mathematics with a Foundation Year
This programme incoprorates a foundation year and is ideal if you want to take a degree in mathematics but your qualifications do not meet the entry requirements for a three-year programme.
International Foundation Year
The International Foundation Programme for Science and Technology provides international students with a year's study in preparation for a Sussex degree course in mathematics or science.
Visiting and Exchange Programme
If you are studying outside the UK, you can take part of your mathematics degree at Sussex, for up to a year.
