Learning Outcomes
Students will be expected to have a good understanding and knowledge of the main areas of the sociology of race and ethnicity. They will have developed skills in assessing theories and evidence on race and ethnicity in society. They will also develop writing and presentational skills. Students should understand concepts such as `race' and `ethnicity' and sociological explanations for divisions in society based on race and ethnicity. They should be able to explain the interaction of race with other forms of social division. They will know about changes in racial stratification and conflict over time. They will develop specialised knowledge of an area of race and ethnicity.
Module Outline
The course explores 'race' and ethnicity within British society. It is concerned with social processes and with how these shape and are shaped by changing conceptualizations of 'race'. The course will focus specifically on Sociological and popular understandings of 'race' and the interaction of 'race' with other social positions such as gender and class. It will examine how racial stratification has changed in Britain, at evidence regarding racial inequalities (with reference to education and employment) and at social conflicts arising out of racial inequalities.
