Performance, Celebrity and Fandom 1: The Drama of Identity

By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the key sociological theories of performance.
2 Compare and contrast the types of performance involved in professional acting and everyday life
3 Reflect on the significance of performance as a collective and ritualised activity in modern societies.
4 Assimilate and evaluate empirical material that is of relevance to the theoretical frameworks covered in the course
5 Show knowledge of several of the substantive themes of the course
The aims of this course are to encourage you to develop a critical awareness of the role of performance in social life, and to reflect on your own experiences of performing identity. It is not only professional actors, musicians and entertainers who perform, but also ordinary people in their everyday lives. If we are all social actors, what are the similarities and differences between performances given on stage and those involved in routine, everyday interaction? The course will draw upon the dramaturgical perspective of Erving Goffman, by examining issues of self-presentation in relation to theatre and the performing arts, rituals and ceremonies, self-identity, gender and sexuality, and collective fandom activities.
