Knowledge and understanding: Students will be expected to acquire a broad-based knowledge and understanding of all of the issue that the course covers. They will also be expected to develop a critical awareness of the work of key thinkers in the field of sociology of education, and to develop their ideas about key texts in the context of empirical data on the existing primary, secondary and tertiary education system.Intellectual abilities and skills: Students will be expected to form an adequate understanding of theoretical course material, and to develop a critical understanding of it. They will also be expected to develop analytical skills in relation to the empirical data considered on the course. They will be expected to contribute one high-quality seminar presentation and to assume control of the seminar discussion for the week of that presentation. This task will be performed in pairs and so will develop their team-working skills. Finally, they will be expected to write and submit assessed a coursework essay of 2,000 words in length and synthesise their broad-based learning for an unseen exam.
The course will first explore historical and current theoretical concepts of education. It will then focus on: the hidden curriculum, the roles and behaviour of the teacher and the student, and higher education, its cultures and customers. We will end the course by looking at key debates related to education: the gender debates, the
class debates, and the role of education as a cultural symbol.
