Course outline
This course represents an introduction to the study of grammar, and provides students with an understanding of the way in which words, phrases and sentences are constructed. The course focuses on inflectional and derivational morphology, word classes, argument structure, constituent structure, phrase structure, grammatical functions, clause types, and main and embedded clause structure. This course equips students with the skills to parse sentences on the basis of formal and functional criteria, to construct and test hypotheses, and to represent word, phrase and sentence structure by means of explicit standard notation. The course will be based on data from English and other languages.
