This participative workshop is aimed at academics and research managers looking to develop knowledge and skills in coaching, particularly current (and aspiring) leaders of research teams


Coaching is practiced worldwide to help people to develop their skills, overcome challenges and reach their goals. Many of the tools, techniques and skills used by coaches can be learned and put into practice quickly and effectively to achieve positive and rewarding results in the workplace.

For PIs and Research Managers, coaching skills are useful in:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and collaborators
  • Supporting and developing students or junior colleagues
  • What skills do you have?
  • Developing effective team practices
  • Reflecting on personal strengths and challenges and devising strategies for future success

This practical and interactive workshop will introduce key coaching concepts and skills that can be used effectively in management/leadership relationships. There will be the opportunity to try out some coaching tools and techniques and discuss how you can use them in your own role and working relationships.

Learning Outcomes

During this workshop participants will:

  • Consider how coaching differs from and relates to management and supervision
  • Understand scenarios in which coaching approaches will be beneficial for management interactions with individuals and teams
  • Gain knowledge of the skills and attributes of effective coaches
  • Explore a range of coaching skills, tools and techniques
  • Experience a 1:1 coaching scenario as both coach and coachee
  • Plan how they will apply their coaching skills for positive results in their own role and working relationships


Dr Natalie James is a professional development coach-mentor and trainer and holds a European Mentoring and Coaching Council accredited qualification in Organisational Coaching and Mentoring. She is a practicing coach ( specialised in coaching for academic researchers and Higher Education professionals. She designs, manages and advises on University mentoring schemes and regularly provides training for professionals in coaching and mentoring skills. She is passionate about the value of coaching relationships for professional development and witnesses daily the transformative benefits of coaching for recipients.
