Introduction

The Macdonald Papers were collected by Alice Macdonald Fleming, née Kipling (1868–1948), sister of Rudyard. The collection includes papers of John Lockwood Kipling, illustrations of Rudyard’s early works, a notebook of c.1891 and press-cuttings of his own journalism. There are 20 letters (some photocopies) from Rudyard to his father, his sister Alice and others. The papers were passed on to Helen and Margaret Macdonald, relatives on Alice’s mother’s side, who donated the collection to the University of Sussex in 1987.
