Finding theses

A thesis, or dissertation, presents the author's research and is submitted in support of a degree or professional qualification. In Higher Education institutions in the UK, a thesis is associated with research towards a D.Phil./PhD (Doctorate) or an M.Phil. (Masters).

The Library has a copy of every doctoral thesis submitted to the University. These cannot be borrowed but can be requested for use inside the Library and are searchable on the Library catalogue.

Index to Theses is a comprehensive listing of theses (with abstracts) accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716.

EThOS is a thesis digitisation project from the British Library and aims to provide immediate full-text access to all theses submitted in UK higher education institutions.

The DART-Europe E-theses Portal contains full text access to electronic theses from 12 European countries.

Dissertation Express allows you to search theses from the US and Canada (and also allows you to access a copy) while the FirstSearch WorldCat lets you do the same for theses from around the world.

The Theses and Dissertations page of the Library's website provides more information.
