British Library articles

Article requests ordered from the British Library will be sent as unencrypted PDF documents via their On Demand service and delivered in the usual way to your registered University of Sussex email address.

Please note the link to your document will only remain active for 30 days from the date the email is sent. We recommend you save your document to your computer. The terms of use allow for printing one paper copy for private study or research for a non-commercial purpose. Further printed copies should not be made and the document should not be forwarded to others.

Articles from other libraries (non-British Library) will be forwarded to your Sussex email address.

Requesting a journal article, conference paper or chapter from a book:

  • Please check Library Search to ensure that the item you require is not already in stock or available electronically before requesting, then go to the Interlibrary Requests page and click on the Place an Interlibrary Request box. You will be asked to sign-in using your IT Services username and password.
  • Select the Article Request form and complete the full bibliographic details of the item required.
  • Read and agree the terms of the copyright declaration by ticking the check box. This electronic signature now replaces the need for signing a paper copy of the copyright declaration.
  • Click on Request to submit your request.

Troubleshooting

  • My document won't open / has blank pages
    • Are you connected to the internet? You need to be online to open your document.
    • Do you have Adobe Reader version 10 or later?  If accessing from a student or staff PC this will already be installed.
  • Still can't open your document?...
    • Has the download link expired? The download link will remain live for 30 days from the date of the original email sent from noreply@bldss.uk.  If it is more than 30 days contact the Interlibrary Requests team
    • Has a previous user locked you out by selecting ‘Remember me on this computer’? If so, in Adobe Reader go to Edit > Preferences > Security and choose Clear remembered account information option, then retry the download link.
  • Can I use an alternative pdf viewer?

Unfortunately, documents only work with Adobe Reader 10 or above, and documents will not open with any other PDF viewer.

  • What if I’m using an iPad / mobile device?

You can download and access your SED document using the free Adobe Reader app, available from the App Store. After clicking on the link to download your document, choose to open it with the Adobe app. On an iPad you can do this by choosing Adobe from the Open with… option at the top right of your screen.

  • Can I share the document with someone else?

No – documents are supplied to you for your personal use.
