Managing citations and EndNote


The University has a site license for EndNote, a popular bibliographic management application. With EndNote software, you can create a personalised database of references. The software allows you to input references manually, or import them from a database (such as ABI or Web of Knowledge). From this, you can then create a bibliography for essays, dissertations or articles in your preferred referencing style.

The EndNote manual & User guide are available for loan from the library. This covers most of the program and is relatively easy to follow. We have the following EndNote books available.


There are a number of free services which offer similar functionality to those above. Amongst the most common are:

  • Zotero - a free bibliographic software extension for users of Firefox. With a desktop version for users of alternate browsers such as Chrome. Features include automatic capture of information from websites, formatted citation export, integration with Microsoft Word.
  • CiteULike - a free social bookmarking service to have academics share, store and organise the academic papers they are reading. It specialises in academic papers.
  • EndNoteWeb - free for Sussex Students; integrates with the EndNote desktop and the ISI Web of Knowledge research platform. Is particularly useful for undergraduates requiring more basic bibliographic references.
