Authentication
We subscribe to many online resources (websites), providing journals, databases and information. The providers need to know you are a legitimate user at Sussex. This will often require you to enter your Sussex username and password, and sometimes requires selecting an 'institutional login' or 'UK Federation link' on the resource's website before you can access their content.
Most of this is a straightforward process and no special knowledge is required. However these pages provide details for those who encounter problems or wish to know more.
Authentication systems
Users need to access online resources, both on and off campus, without requiring special usernames and passwords. At the same time licence agreements need to be adhered to.
We use two systems at Sussex:
- Shibboleth (UK Federation) : a new system being used internationally, it allows you to access resources from anywhere using your Sussex username and password. read more...
- IP authentication & Ezproxy : all computers have a unique IP address. Using this form of authentication will allow access to any IP addresses belonging to a Sussex campus computer, so anyone on campus can access our resources. To use them off campus users must access the resource via the Electronic Library, which uses a system called Ezproxy to authenticate them.
We no longer use the Athens authentication system.
