Biography

Philip joined Sussex Law School in September 2014. Prior to this he undertook a socio-legal, empirical PhD at the University of Exeter under the supervision of Professor Anne Barlow on the legal recognition of gay and lesbian co-parenting arrangements following assisted reproduction.

Philip also completed a Master of Research in Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Exeter. Before this he undertook an LLM (by Research) at the University of Aberdeen under the supervision of Professor Paul Beaumont into the private international law dimensions of the EU Succession Regulation, as well an LLB (Honours) at the University of Aberdeen.

Philip is keen to supervise PhD students in the areas of family law, sexuality and the law, tort law and mental health law. He is particularly keen to supervise students hoping to undertake socio-legal and empirical research in relation to same-sex parenting or exploring LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

Philip currently supervises the following research students:
