Sussex Centre for Language Studies

Progression to your degree

At the Sussex Centre for Language Studies we pride ourselves on the high quality of our language teaching and the progression of students from our pre-sessional courses has always been high.

In 2012, for example, 343 students completed a pre-sessional course and 338 of those students (98.5 per cent) progressed to a degree at Sussex. You will not be required to take another IELTS or any other external assessment when you finish your pre-sessional. However, the procedure for progression depends on whether you are on an integrated or standard pre-sessional.

Five-week Integrated Pre-sessional: for postgraduate students the five-week pre-sessional can be part of an Integrated Programme: once you have met the language entrance requirement for the five-week pre-sessional, you will receive an unconditional offer for both your pre-sessional and degree at Sussex. This means you can apply for one student visa to cover the entire duration of your study (combining the pre-sessional and the degree). You must have met all academic requirements for your degree in order to receive an integrated offer of this kind. If you attend the whole course, complete all the work set, and take all the assessments you are guaranteed to progress onto your postgraduate course.

Five-week Standard Pre-sessional: this option is for undergraduate students. Postgraduate students who have not yet met the academic requirement of their degree programme can also choose this option.

You will be required to reach the required grade in all assessments in order to progress to your degree programme. This means you will need to extend your visa at the end of the pre-sessional. In 2012, more than 98 per cent of students continued on to their degree.

10-week Standard Pre-sessional: all students on this course will hold conditional offers and will therefore be required to meet the required standard in all end of course assessments. This means you will need to extend your visa at the end of the pre-sessional. In 2012, more than of 98 per cent of students were accepted onto their programme of study.

In-sessional Support: any student who does not successfully complete all the assessments on any of the pre-sessional courses may be required to continue courses in academic and language development classes in the autumn term.
