German software

Michael Shaughnessy has compiled A Guide to German Language Learning Software (commercial as well as shareware). Robert Shea has a list of useful CALL and online learning links and tips.

  • Clicktionary (freeware for non-commercial use), Cleverlean 2000.
Point-and-click instant translations of more than 130,000 words and 15,000 phrases - in English or German; use in text editing or web browsing software, for instance. There is limited support for personal vocabulary lists for free, but the Pro version (€20 per year) lifts this restriction and offers dictionaries in French and Spanish too.

  • Computerlex A. Oberlé 1996.
Exercises closely integrated with the Lernexpress video course, featuring illustrative materials, games and quizzes. (DOS)
The author has also written a resource manual for Lernexpress

  • Fertig (shareware £36), L & M Associates 1993.
Multiple-choice quiz in a board-game style, with questions on spoken phrases, shopping, food, school and writing.

  • GI-Zertifikat (shareware), J. Schumann 1994.
The official list of the "Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache" (ZDaF) of the Goethe-Institut and the Deutscher Volkshoch-schul-Verband. You will find all the basic vocabulary with example sentences that show you how to use these words in a context. Very useful for beginners. About 2000 words in hypertext format. (DOS)

  • New English-German Dictionary (shareware £20), R. Werner 2000
English<->German dictionary which helps you to find translations to a specific term including several examples for context usage. Translations are either based on various sources from the Internet or were entered by the author and other volunteers. Unregistered version has over 150,000 terms; registered version has many more. (Windows 3 and above)
