Intensive English Course

A mark of qualityWho are the courses for?

Any adult student aged eighteen years or over, who is not a beginner and who is serious about learning English, will find these courses suitable. Short stays are possible, but most of our students enrol for six months or more. Many of them are planning to go to college or university or work in the UK.

Course description

Classes take place during the Autumn, Spring and Summer university terms. These are each ten weeks long. Every week there are fifteen hours of tuition. There are 6 components in the course:

  1. Grammar (1.5 - 3 hours per week)
  2. Reading and vocabulary development (1.5 - 3 hours per week)
  3. Writing skills (1.5 - 3 hours per week)
  4. Listening and speaking skills (3 - 4.5 hours per week)
  5. Supervised personal study programme (1.5 hours per week)
  6. Research project (1.5 hours per week)

Course aims

The programme aims to help you understand spoken and written English, and to improve your communication skills in speaking and writing. You will also work on your grammar and on increasing your vocabulary. In addition, you will receive training and guidance in the following key skills:

  • study skills
  • cross-cultural communication
  • effective use of Information Technology (IT) in language learning
  • research and presentation skills
  • setting and achieving your own personal language learning targets

What else?

Your fee includes a free course-book. The Language Learning Centre offers you superb digital, multimedia classroom and self-access facilities with free internet access, satellite TV, together with a wide range of video and audio materials for personal use outside class hours.

Students who wish to develop specific aspects of English should take, in addition, some of the Supplementary Courses offered during the afternoons.

NOTE: Intensive English together with most of the supplementary courses are accredited by the University of Sussex and can, for example, be taken as part of a Visiting and Exchange Undergraduate Programme. Please note that no resit modes are available for these courses.
