This course is designed to train complete beginners how to use Word in an effective and efficient manner.

This session will cover:

  • Creating and saving documents
  • Selecting text
  • Character formatting
  • Line spacing

Level 2: Word Intermediate

This session is for people who want to learn more about Word and aims to continue from the Word Introduction course.

The session will cover:

  • Character formatting
  • Paragraph formatting
  • Format painter
  • Cut and paste using the clipboard feature
  • Bullets and numbering
  • Simple Headers and Footers
  • Page numbering (simple)
  • Applying borders (text/paragraphs/pages)

Level 2: Working with Tables and Pictures

1.5 hours

This session is for Word users who wish to produce tables and would like to manipulate text around pictures.

The session will cover:

  • Creating tables and using the main features
  • Inserting clipart and pictures
  • Manipulate text around pictures and tables
  • Add captions to tables and pictures
  • Make a Table of Figures (or Tables)
  • Use pictures as backgrounds

Level 3: Using Word to Write your Thesis

2.5 hours

This course looks at Word in greater depth and is particularly useful for those who will be creating long documents, such as a thesis, dissertation or report.

The session will cover:

  • Creating a Table of Contents
  • Styles (use and modify)
  • Using Section Breaks (e.g. to divide documents into chapters)
  • Creating different Headers and Footers in the same document
  • Footnotes and EndNotes
  • Page Numbering
  • Find and Replace
  • Go To

Level 1: PowerPoint Introduction

2.5 hours

This session aims to give you a grounding in the use of PowerPoint for the production of presentations for lectures or demonstrations. You will learn to create slides; add clipart pictures; use different coloured backgrounds and pre-defined layouts; add slide transitions and animation effects.

Level 1: Excel Introduction

This course uses Excel to show the basic concepts of a spreadsheet. You will learn how to create a simple spreadsheet by entering data and changing the format; build simple formulas and use the Sum function.

The session will include:

  • Selecting parts of a spreadsheet
  • Building simple formulas

Level 2: Excel Introduction - Step Further

2.5 hours

This session is for people who want to learn more about Excel. It aims to reinforce some of the basic concepts of Excel and to cover some of the features and functions that make Excel a useful tool and provides a basis for other Level 2 courses.

The session will cover:

  • Creating formulas using absolute and relative cell referencing
  • Order of evaluation in formulas
  • Summing across worksheets
  • Using functions (AVERAGE, COUNT, COUNTIF, MAX, MIN)
  • Sorting data
  • Merge and centre heading
  • Applying vertical text alignment
  • Format painter
  • Freezing rows and columns
  • Adding comments

Prerequisite: Level 1: Excel Introduction or MUST be able to build simple formulas, use autosum and be able to use the fill handle to copy formulas. The fill-handle is the small black square in the lower-right corner of the selection - when you point to the fill-handle the pointer changes to a black cross.

Level 2: Excel Charts

1.5 hours

This session is for people who want to produce charts in Excel. Excel uses the term chart and not graph for all its graphical displays.

The session will cover:

  • Creating a bar and pie chart
  • Customising a chart
  • Changing a chart type
  • Reversing series and categories
  • Combination charts
  • Creating a secondary axis
  • Creating a Scatter chart, adding a trend line

Level 2: Excel Formulas and Functions

2.0 hours

This session is for those who have basic Excel knowledge but would like to review basic formulas and build on that knowledge. The session covers the formulas and functions features of the Level 1: Excel Introduction and the Level 2: Excel Introduction - Step Further courses.

Level 2: Excel Analysing Data & Pivot Tables

1.5 hours

This session builds on the Level 2: Excel Introduction - Step Further course and covers sorting, extracting, subtotalling data.

The session will cover:

  • Working with Tables
  • Autofilter
  • Using the Table Command
  • Calculating subtotals
  • Outlines

and Pivot tables, a tool which can automatically sort, count and total the data stored in one table or spreadsheet and create a summary of it.

Prerequisite: Level 2: Excel Introduction - Step Further or must have some experience of using spreadsheets.

Level 3: Excel Advanced Functions

This session builds on the Excel Introduction - Step Further course and is for people who want to use more Excel functions.

  • VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP functions
  • Date functions
  • Text to Column tool

Introduction to Managing your Citations

2.5 hours

EndNote is a bibliographic database software package, which enables you to organise your lists of references (citations) and create bibliographies for use with Word.

This session will cover:

  • How to obtain the software and/or use EndNote Web
  • Creating a New Library
  • Manually Adding a Reference
  • Importing a Reference from an Online Database such as Scopus
  • Importing PDFs to create References
  • Organising, Sorting and Searching an EndNote library
  • Inserting Citations into a Word document using Cite As You Write (CWYW)
  • Editing and Managing References in Word
  • Inserting Images

Prerequisite: Good word processing skills and an understanding of how to use the Library online Electronic Resources. Also be familiar with referencing - for guidance please refer to InfoSuss (UG) or InfoPlus (PG)

Creating web pages with Dreamweaver

(approx 2 hours)

If you need to create or manage web pages, this course introduces the general concepts of publishing information on the web. You will learn how to set up and edit pages using Dreamweaver, a powerful application for professional web authoring.

Before the course please request personal web space set up following the instructions in FAQ 145 - How can I get a personal home page?

The session includes:

  • creating a web page
  • adding text and links
  • incorporating images
  • configuring Dreamweaver for your site

Prerequisite:

You should have experience of navigating the web and you will also need to check that you are able to have Dreamweaver installed on your computer.

Conversion to Windows 7 and Office 2010

(approx 1 hour)

This session is for those staff who are about to upgrade to Windows 7 and Office 2010 or for those staff who already have either installed on their PC. Office 2010 includes the latest versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Windows 7 has quite a different feel to it.

Prerequisite: Attendees should have experience of previous versions of Windows and Office (such as Windows XP and Office 2007).

Using IT @ Sussex

(approx 1 hour)

This induction session aims to familiarise new students with the IT facilities available from IT Services (ITS). (No certificate is issued for this course.)

The session will cover:

  • Printing at Sussex / Using the PABS machine
  • Using your Sussex secure disk space
  • My Accounts
  • Accessing your Sussex Email on and off campus
  • Sussex Direct
  • Where to find help with IT related problems
  • Available IT training
  • Useful hints and tips

Prerequisite: This course is for new students who feel they need more help in using IT or for those who missed the session in Freshers week.

This course will not run again during the spring and summer terms. Please collect a welcome booklet, which contains all the necessary information, from the IT Service Desk, Shawcross.

AV Training/Refresher Course (Lecture Theatre)

(approx 1 hour)

This session is designed to introduce teaching staff to the basic functions of lecture theatre AV equipment, enabling users to deliver their presentations smoothly and with greater confidence:

  • How to operate the lighting and audio in lecture theatres
  • How to switch on and operate the PC and data projector
  • How to operate lecture capture
  • Use of USB devices
  • Switching between modes of projection (data/dvd/vhs)
  • Connecting your own laptop to the projector
  • Basic troubleshooting

AV Training/Refresher Course (Seminar Room with IWB)

(approx 1 hour)

This session is designed to introduce teaching staff and students to the basic functions of seminar room AV equipment, enabling users to deliver their presentations smoothly and with greater confidence.

The session will cover:

  • How to operate the audio and screen in seminar rooms
  • How to switch on and use the PC and data projector
  • Using USB devices
  • Switching between modes of projection
  • Connecting your own laptop to the projector
  • Using the document camera
  • Checking the Interactive Whiteboard activation
  • Basic troubleshooting

E-Learning using Study Direct: an introduction

(approx 2 hours)

At the end of the course you will be able to use Study Direct to:

  • Create course content that would be suitable to use for academic teaching
  • Upload files containing a variety of teaching materials including handouts, lecture notes, reading lists and other web resources
  • Confidently manage your Study Direct course sites
  • Know where to go to find out more

E-learning using Study Direct: building quizzes

(approx 2 hours)

The Quiz module in Study Direct can be used to provide self-testing tools that students can use to get immediate feedback on their understanding of the course.

At the end of the workshop and training course you will be able to:

  1. Develop a set of questions that will engage students, help them test their understanding of the course material or help you assess their understanding of the course material.
  2. Use appropriate questions to create and publish a quiz in Study Direct
  3. Analyze the results from your quiz
  4. Find out how quiz results will be displayed to students and learn about the Study Direct team's plans to make this information visible from Sussex Direct

You will be able to create quiz content that would be suitable for engaging student learning. You will be able to design a set of quizzes using a variety of Question types, among them multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions. You will be able to access questions that are kept in the course Question bank and which can be re-used within courses and between courses. You will be able to use Quizzes that can allow multiple attempts and is automatically marked, and you, the teacher, can choose whether to give an immediate response to the student and/or show the correct answers.

Prerequisite:

Staff who are familiar or have prior experience with course creation in Study Direct.

Training surgery

30 minutes (bookable sessions)

These regular workshop sessions are an opportunity for staff to get personal support and guidance for a particular problem they have encountered when using Word, Excel, or Powerpoint. Staff need to bring all relevant information to the workshop. To book a place please email its-training@its.sussex.ac.uk.

(every Wednesday: bookable half-hour sessions available between 10.30am and 12.30pm)
