New phishing message: Message from your Faculty

Posted: Wed 25 Apr 2018, 2:54pm.

A new phishing message with the subject "Message from your Faculty" has been received by a number of staff and students. This message claims that you have a new message relating to your timetable, and provides a link to log in. However, the link leads to a fake website designed to capture your login details so that your account can be hijacked.

It uses common phishing language:

  • URGENCY - this message claims that you must follow the instructions and update your timetable "immediately"
  • CLAIMS TO COME FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE - in this case, "faculty" and "admin department"
  • PROVIDES A FAKE LINK - the link leads to an unfamiliar and suspicious-looking URL

If you receive this message please delete it. If you're ever concerned that an email might be malicious, or if you think you might have given your account details away, please contact the IT Service Desk at support@sussex.ac.uk
