Spectre and Meltdown Vulnerability

As you may have seen in the news, security issues have been identified with the processors (CPU’s) in a majority of computers. These vulnerabilities relate to most user devices, PCs and core service equipment on campus and needs to be addressed at the earliest opportunity.

IT Services have been closely monitoring this situation and are working with our suppliers to assess and fix the problem. Equipment manufacturers are also continuing to develop their strategies to rectify these vulnerabilities and we are currently awaiting their final recommendations and software patches.

Once definitive patches become available, we will be carrying out a programme of scheduled maintenance to protect University PCs and service systems, in collaboration with our suppliers. IT Services have already started preparation work to patch some systems where possible.

We will also provide advice and recommendations on how users can protect their own devices, following confirmation from the main suppliers.

Please ensure you’re subscribed to the ITS News system for further updates. We will provide further updates when firm information becomes available from supplies and the equipment manufacturers.
