Particularly convincing phishing emails

There have been a number of phishing emails reported this week which are particularly convincing.

One message, which was reported today, appears to come from a Sussex email address and claims to come from the IT Service Desk. It warns users that their account has been compromised and will be closed down if they don't follow a link.

Phishing emails are designed to appear innocuous. They contain links to carefully designed websites that trick you into giving away important personal information. The spammers who send them will design the messages to be alarming or worrying so that you are more likely to follow a link in a hurry, rather than take time to properly assess whether the message is authentic or not.

Please be vigilant for phishing emails and delete them if they arrive in your inbox. If you aren't sure whether an email is valid or not, please forward it to support@sussex.ac.uk to be checked.

A list of identified threats is available on the IT Services website.
