We're investigating a problem with sending emails this morning, Tuesday 26 May.
The fault is preventing students from sending messages with the University webmail service but other mail programs are also likely to be affected. We're sorry for the frustration this issue is causing and are working to fix it as soon as we can.
It's possible to work around the problem temporarily by using a different mail program to send mail, such as the email function in the Sussex Mobile app. Alternatively, if you are able to change the port number your email program uses for outgoing mail, you can try changing it from 465 to 587.
Technical details
The Sussex mail servers are currently not responding on one of the ports used for sending messages (port 465). This port is used by a lot of mail programs, including the student webmail service. Mail programs which are configured to use a different port (such as 587) are not affected by the issue.
The problems with the non-responsive port 465 on the mail servers have now been resolved, and it should now be possible to send email again from the student mail system. We are sorry for the break in service.
