Security of staff computers

Staff computers at Sussex are being set to lock automatically to improve the security of the University's systems and data.

Windows PCs and Macs in staff offices will automatically lock their screens if inactive for a short while. The member of staff who is using the computer will then need to re-enter their password to continue working.

Staff have been encouraged to lock their own screens for several years but it's easy to forget or be away for longer than intended. The automatic lock is an additional safeguard to make sure the University's systems are properly protected.

The measure is common practice in universities and other organisations and has been trialled with staff in IT Services in the last few weeks. The automatic lock will be introduced to other staff computers during 2015, starting with parts of Professional Services.
