How to...

Connect to the new research volume (formerly the R Drive)

The new research storage platform is available from computers on campus. You can follow these procedures on personally owned devices, providing they are connected to a campus network such as eduroam or wired connections in labs and offices.

This guide details how to connect to the new research storage system set up in 2017. Please check with the Research Support Team if you are not sure of the platform where your data is stored.

Windows

You can connect to the research volume from a campus Windows PC or Windows Remote.

  • from the Start menu, click Computer and then Map network drive
  • for Drive select an available letter from the drop down list
(The recommendation is that you use P: to map the new research volume.  You should not use R: .
If you use R: to connect to the new storage, you will find it is re-mapped back to the old storage platform next time you log in.)
  • in the Folder field, enter: \\researchdata.uscs.sussex.ac.uk\[volume]
  • replace [volume] with the folder you need to access (e.g. gdsc)
  • if you select Reconnect at logon then the drive will be reconnected automatically each time you log on

  • if you're logged in to a Sussex PC with your own username and password, click Finish and the drive should then connect.
  • alternatively, tick the box to Connect using different credentials and click Finish. In the authentication window that pops up, click Use another account, then enter ad_us followed by your Sussex username (e.g. ad_us\ano23) and your normal password and click OK

Mac

  • open Finder and from the top menu, choose Go and Connect to Server
  • in the Server address field, type: smb://researchdata.uscs.sussex.ac.uk/[volume]
  • replace [volume] with the folder you need to access (e.g. gdsc)
  • click the + button to add the address to the list of favourites below as this will make it easier to connect next time

  • if you see an authentication window, choose Registered User and enter your Sussex username (e.g. ano23) and password, then Connect

Linux

Connections on Linux are similar to the process for the Mac. For example, on Ubuntu:

  • open the file browser and click on Connect to Server
  • in the Server Address field, type smb://researchdata.uscs.sussex.ac.uk/[volume]
  • replace [volume] with the folder you need to access (e.g. gdsc)
  • click Connect
