What does it mean when a message is held with the reason, "Too many recipients"?

This problem normally occurs if people add Cc and Bcc addresses to their message, in addition to the address of your mailing list.  Each Mailman list has a limit to the total number of recipients of a message, as an anti-spamming measure.   The mailing list itself counts as one address.  The default limit is 10, so if someone emails the list and copies to 10 other addresses (making a total of 11 recipients), this would trigger this error.

To adjust the limit for your list, follow these steps:

  1. Open your list's Admin page.
  2. Click Privacy Options in your list's admin page
  3. Click Recipient Filters.
  4. Scroll down to the option labelled "Ceiling on acceptable number of recipients for a posting" and enter the preferred limit in the box.
  5. Click the 'Submit Your Changes' button button to save your changes.
  6. When the page has refreshed, click the Logout link to close it.
