Collaborative Doctoral Studentships

The Sussex fund for Collaborative Doctoral Studentships is open in responsive mode

Following the first pilot round which has funded studentships in Informatics, Social Work, Geography and SPRU, the Doctoral School has launched a new round of funding for collaborative PhD scholarships for which Sussex supervisors can now apply.

To give maximum flexibility to supervisors and external funders, applications can be made at any time.

The Collaborative Doctoral Studentships initiative aims to promote and facilitate doctoral research in partnership with non-academic partners – from the private, public or third sector.  It is designed to assist in the development of lasting research partnerships and to promote the recruitment of high quality doctoral candidates.

The funding can cover any discipline and would suit situations in which a supervisor is developing links with a company, government body or charity who are able to part-fund a studentship.

Projects would normally be expected to begin at the start of the next academic year (or earlier if everything is in place) and run for 36 to 48 months.

University funding will provide match funding equal to the contribution made by the external partner.

The funding does not cover supervisor time or overheads (estates and indirect costs) but will match any PhD stipends, fees and student research and training expenses (consumables, travel, conferences fees) offered by external partners.
