Launch of Doctoral Overseas Conference Grant

We are pleased to announce our first call of the Doctoral Overseas Conference (DOC) grant, which replaces the Alumni Travel Grant scheme.

The DOC grant supports overseas conference attendance for our doctoral students who are active participants in a conference (with either a paper or presentation accepted). Up to £1,000 can be applied for (for any one student during the period of your registration). Applicants must be registered for a doctoral degree at the University of Sussex and the application made prior to submission of their thesis.

Funding applications will be considered by members of the Doctoral Studies Committee.  In allocating the awards the following criteria will be used:

  • Quality of application
  • Conference profile and suitability
  • Supervisor’s statement

Payment includes a contribution towards travel costs, accommodation and conference fees only.

Visit our funding pages for full details of how to apply and to download an application form.

Excursions, the University of Sussex's interdisciplinary postgraduate journal, is going through its annual renovation

As the current crop of editors cling desperately to power, mumbling something about the forthcoming publication of "Boundaries" in November, online and in print, a new editorial team crouches threateningly in the wings, plotting a new issue under the leadership of Lana Harper (School of English).

Watch this space for their upcoming Call for Papers, a coveted invitation to the launch party for "Boundaries", and updates on a fascinating power struggle at the heart of the doctoral community.

You can get involved in Excursions by submitting an article, becoming a peer reviewer, or joining the editorial team, contact us to find out more.

Save the date - Festive Event: Thursday 11th December

We're excited to be working with the Hive Scholars on our joint festive event taking place on the afternoon of Thursday 11th December (15:00 - 17:00). We hope you will join us to get to know doctoral researchers from across the University in a relaxed and informal setting, hear about the doctoral research of your colleagues, and enjoy some festive refreshments. Put the date in your diary, and as it's only November, we’ll talk no more of festive events until nearer the time…
