Sussex Researcher School

Covering your research costs

This month, we're profiling two online databases of funding opportunities for doctoral researchers, The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding and Research Professional. You can also find out more about funding your research on the Doctoral School's funding pages.

Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online is all about alternative sources of funding - especially charities - which can make awards to any student regardless of subject or nationality. The Guide contains a huge database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance written by successful applicants, and numerous tools to help you prepare a winning grant application.

You will find a wealth of sources available and there is now a searchable database of funding opportunities, these range from funding to attend a conference to funding for buying books.

The Guide is password protected but for current student PhD students at the University of Sussex you should register using your Sussex email address.

The authors of the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding will be visiting Sussex on Wednesday 15th April to run their workshop 'Postgraduate Funding: Considering the Alternatives'. Book your place here or visit the Researcher Development Programme webpages.

Research Professional

Research Professional is an online database of research funding opportunities and a source of international research policy and practice news. You are free to browse the content of the site, create customised searches of its content and share this information with colleagues. All of the information you need to get up and running can be found in the 'Help Topics' sections.

There are two possible options for accessing Research Professional:

  • Campus Access

This provides a quick and easy route to research professional’s database without the need to register. However, the features are limited. You CANNOT save searches but you can e-mail any search results to yourself or anyone who you think may be interested.

  • Self-registration

This takes around 5 minutes to complete. For straightforward instructions please see the Quick Start Guide [PDF 98KB]. The added benefit of registering is that you can set up e-mail alerts and save funding searches, which will automatically update.

Find out more about Research Professional by coming along to our Researcher Development Programme workshop on Tuesday 17th February 'Introduction to Research Professional'. Book your place here or visit the Researcher Development Programme webpages.
