Computers and creativity collide at Sussex conference
A conference exploring the past, present and future of creative design technologies in a wide range of fields took place this week at Sussex.
Devised by Sussex academic Dr Chris Kiefer and supported by the Sussex Humanities Lab, the symposium addressed the skills and expertise brought to the world of creative technology design by researchers and practitioners from the worlds of music, art, craft and various other design disciplines.
Participants included researchers in design and creative technology, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, music and experimental physics.
They were joined by experimental musicians, artists, sound artists and composers, computer systems developers and others to collaborate and share ideas on the future of their fields.
The keynote speakers were Alex Bone, a creative director and product designer at Mettle Studio; Michael Doser, a research physicist at CERN who specialises in antimatter; and Andrey Smirnov from the Centre for Electroacoustic Music at Moscow State Conservatory.
The two-day event will culminate this evening in an evening of experimental music and instrument performance, live at the Attenborough Centre. The live performances are open to all, and tickets can be found at www.attenboroughcentre.com/events.
The symposium was funded by the British Academy Rising Star scheme, of which Chris was a recipient earlier this year.
