Staff and students give views on campus IT

Over 1,200 staff and students shared their opinions of IT Services as part of a joint survey with the Library in December.

A large number also commented on the helpfulness and approachability of ITS staff (255 comments). The majority of people reported they were pleased with office and student computers on the campus, appreciating the wide range of software and the performance of hardware.

Respondents also gave details of areas where they would like to see improvements, with wi-fi continuing to top the list (110 comments). The proliferation of devices and online services is demanding constant growth in the wi-fi provision but the service at Sussex is developing fast and a number of respondents noted improvements in speed and coverage (30 comments).

There were calls for longer opening hours and improvements in the way IT Services deal with service requests. Many of the responses also mentioned the reliability of file systems after a problematic upgrade in the summer led to a series of difficulties for staff and students.

Over Christmas, ITS completed a lengthy and complex programme to restore file systems to full health and have work in progress to address other concerns highlighted in the survey, including:

  • a complete refresh of wi-fi access points in the residences,
  • a major programme to improve the consistency in support provision and refresh the main user area in Shawcross,
  • a joint project with the Library to double the number of self-service laptops for loan.

See the graphic below for a summary of the key points and visit the IT Services site for further updates on the actions they are taking in response.
