Three new members elected to Council

Professor Steve McGuire, Professor Jane Cowan and Mr Josh Hutton have this month been elected to join Council, the University’s governing body.

    Professor Steve McGuire, BMeC Head of School, has been elected from and by Senate members to sit on Council for a term of three years. Steve replaces Professor Pete Clifton and joins Dr Elizabeth Craig and Professor Andrea Cornwall as one of three members of Council elected in this way.
  • Professor Jane Cowan, Professor of Social Anthropology, has been re-elected from and by the academic community to sit on Council for a second term of three years. Jane joins Professor Mariana Mazzucato as one of two members of academic staff sitting on Council.
  • Mr Josh Hutton has been elected as the Postgraduate Research Student on Council. Josh replaces Tom Martin and his appointment is for one calendar year to December 2016.

Council is made up of 25 members including 15 independent members. It forms one of the three statutory bodies of the University, alongside Senate and Court. Its role is:

  • To determine strategic objectives for the University and to monitor performance against these
  • To discharge its responsibilities in relation to legal and other external requirements
  • To meet requirements deriving from the Charter and Statutes
  • To monitor institutional effectiveness
  • To monitor its own effectiveness
