They also met with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing (centre).
Professor Isa Hussaini from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Maiduguri gave a seminar for staff and students in the Genome Damage and Stability Centre.
He spoke about his research, which has created an evidence base to demonstrate that eight naturally growing medicinal plants in Nigeria have anti-cancer properties.
Professor Isa (second from right) praised the “world-class facilities” at the University of Sussex.
The Nigerian High Commissioner, Adah Simon Ogah (right), welcomed the newly announced scholarships for Nigerian students worth between £3,000 and £5,000.
A number of eminent Nigerians have graduated from Sussex including Alhaji Babagana Kingibe (former Secretary to the Federal Government), Revd Professor Adebayo Dada Akinde (Archbishop of Lagos), and Bolaji Abdullahi (former Sports Minister).
Professor Hussaini also drew attention to a fundraising campaign by Nigerian students at the University of Sussex to raise money for a Nigerian breast cancer charity via Just Giving.
Professor Bacon said: “It was a great visit and we look forward to working with Professor Isa and colleagues at the University of Maiduguri in the areas of cancer biology and drug discovery."
