Sussex up to 19th in 'Table of Tables'
The University of Sussex has risen to 19th place in the Times Higher Education magazine’s 'Table of Tables'.
The table, published on Thursday 15 October, is based on the combined results of the UK’s three main domestic university rankings.
- In April 2015 the University of Sussex rose 17 places in the Complete University Guide, with a new ranking of 21st out of 126 universities
- in May 2015 a rise of 24 places put Sussex at 19th in the Guardian University Guide 2016
- and in September 2015 the University jumped six places to reach 19th in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016
The THE says: “The 2016 table shows that the University of Sussex has had an impressive recovery in the eyes of national newspapers, re-entering in 19th position after last appearing in the top 30 in 2012.”
Professor Clare Mackie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “This is great news. One of the University’s major goals in the 2013-18 strategy, Making the Future, is to be consistently in the top 20 of UK universities.
“We did have a dip in the league tables in 2012 due to major restructuring of our academic year and our curriculum.
“Now that we’ve embedded these changes, there have been real positive outcomes for our students in terms of retention rates and student employability.
“Those improvements are now reflected in league table positions and we’re delighted that we’ve come back up again and returned to the top 20.”
The THE’s 'Table of Tables' is calculated by giving the 30 top-ranked institutions points corresponding to their position in the three league tables (30 for first place, 29 for second and so on). The total scores determine the positions.
The table was first compiled in 2008, when Sussex was ranked 30th, before rising to 25th in 2009 and jumping again in 2010 to joint 18th. It is one of two returners in the latest table.
