Try a new activity for free with Commit to Get Fit in May

Staff are invited to sign up for Sussexsport’s month-long fitness and wellbeing challenge from 3 - 27 May.

beach volleyballNow in its fifth year, Commit to Get Fit is a chance for staff to socialise with colleagues across campus and try new sports and activities. 

Sussexsport welcome participation from all staff. You can team up and register as a school or department, form a team with colleagues across campus or sign up as an individual.

Teams can have as few or as many people as you like and activities are suitable for group and individual participation. The majority of sessions will take place on weekday mornings, lunchtimes and in the early evening.

Individuals and teams can set their own targets around exercise, eating and other wellbeing activities.

Participants will also benefit from free access to sports facilities: go to a class, visit the fitness rooms or play a racket sport. There will also be special one-off sessions to take part in.

These are just some of the events and activities being organised by Sussexsport this May: 

  • Archery
  • Hooping
  • Bouldering
  • Wheelchair Basketball
  • Social Badminton
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Mountain Biking
  • 30 minute indoor cycling and gym sessions
  • Trapeze
  • Outdoor fitness and Zumba
  • Swing dancing and more

The Staff Development Unit (SDU) will also be running Wellbeing Wednesdays throughout the month, with workshops on:

  • Emotional Intelligence: Self Awareness at Work
  • Understanding and using your strengths
  • Finding Balance in Performance and Wellbeing
  • Mindfulness at Work

Sussexsport will be running the challenge alongside a county-wide workplace challenge 'Reaching Rio', which is supported by the West Sussex Health and Well-Being Board.

This challenge runs from 16 May to 5 August and Sussexsport will be supporting staff by arranging some extra activities during May.

Commit to Get Fit will start with the annual Boundary Walk on 4 May. The annual Boundary Run will take place on 25 May, towards the end of the challenge.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) were Commit to Get Fit 2015’s ‘Most Inspiring Team’ and saw it as a great chance to try something new and get active as a School.

Team member Rebecca Foster said: “It was a brilliant way to meet colleagues from other parts of the university and following on from the month, it has been nice to see familiar faces from activities we took part in around campus. I’m looking forward to getting involved again, and trying more new things.”
