New and improved online programme for doctoral supervisors

A new online support programme for supervisors is now available on Study Direct.

A photo of two people talking in a room where the walls are lined with bookshelvesThe Supervising Doctoral Studies programme - more than a year in development - has been customised to give supervisors access to key handbooks and policy documents.

There are around 600 supervisors at Sussex and demands on them are increasing as the national landscape in postgraduate research and training changes.

Supervising Doctoral Studies is not a blueprint, but a starting-point for further reflection and discussion on the supervisory relationship - reflecting on what supervisors do and how they do it.

There are series of nine online modules to support supervisors, both new and experienced. This includes an introduction to the contemporary doctorate which sets out some of the ongoing changes in the doctoral landscape.

Each unit includes Sussex-specific information in the Your context pods on the right of the screen (e.g. information on Sussex annual review procedures; diversity policy).

Units vary in length but each screen includes a rough estimate of how long it takes to complete. The programme will accompany face-to-face events but it can be followed independently.

Additional PhD supervisor workshops are now available via the Staff Development Unit pages on Sussex Direct. The next workshop, entitled PhD: Facing in or out, focuses on how to weigh up the competing interests of timely completion and wider career development; purpose, rationale, values and standards for doctoral research. This workshop is back due to popular demand on Wednesday 4 November and is for supervisors in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
