Prince Andrew learns of hopes for Sussex quantum technology research

Sussex Theoretical Physics professor, Barry Garraway, recently met HRH The Duke of York at an event in Birmingham.

Professor Garraway, head of Sussex's Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics research group, was attending a quantum technology hub event held at the University of Birmingham on 29 September.

Prince Andrew attended as part of his patronage of British science, technology and engineering expertise.

Professor Garraway said: "It was a pleasure to meet Prince Andrew, a supporter of UK business, who could appreciate the Sussex work on quantum technology and cold atom gyroscopes."

That work is part of the UK £270 million Quantum Technology initiative which has the long term aim to benefit UK industry with new devices such as more precise sensors for motion, magnetic fields and gravitational fields."

Professor Garraway explained to the Duke how some of the work being carried out on gyroscopes at the University of Sussex may improve the future capability of navigation systems - reducing reliance on satellite guidance.
