The University is due to take over a retail unit in Brighton’s North Laine, which boasts the largest selection of independent retailers on the south coast.

The temporary space in Gardner Street – to be called @SussexUni – will open on Wednesday (29 April) for a month.

Commenting on the pilot project, John Duffy, Registrar for the University, said: “With its cluster of thriving independent retailers, Brighton’s North Laine was a natural choice for our temporary presence, which will provide a one-of-a-kind showcase for a whole host of creative talent across campus.

“While we have a lot of people coming onto campus, we also are out and about in Brighton and the local region – and this space will allow us to meet and chat with prospective students, parents, teachers and the local community.

“There are a lot of great things going on at the University and the shop gives us an opportunity to showcase our high-quality research, our range of courses and some brilliant student work.”

Local residents and visitors to Brighton who drop into the shop will also be able to find out about the University’s future vision for campus, including the newly refurbished and soon-to-be-launched Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts.

The shop at 20 Gardner Street – located alongside cafes, gift shops and other retailers and just a stone’s throw from the Komedia entertainment venue – will be open until Friday 29 May. Opening times are Monday–Friday 12noon–6pm; and Saturday-Sunday 10am–4pm.

There will also be some evening events for teachers, prospective students and other stakeholders so that they can find out about the University.
