Obituary: Paul Allpress

Paul Allpress, who provided IT support at Sussex for almost twenty years, has died aged 58.

Paul AllpressPaul came to Sussex as a mature student of Computer Science in 1994 and, within a few years, was putting new-found skills into practice as the computer technician for the School of Social Sciences. It was the beginning of a long and happy association with the University during which he went on to set up and manage the Arts Computing Unit. Under his stewardship, the group prospered and became a strong component of a consolidated IT Services.

In 2004, Paul received the Chancellor's Award for his contribution to the work and life of the University, notably his "calm approach to problems, good humour and dedication to providing a high-quality service". He went on to become the Head of Staff Desktop Support for the University before retiring in March 2015.

But computing was only one of his skills and he showed, in a varied and successful career, he could turn his hand to anything. After picking up the hospitality trade as a boy in his parent's hotel in Eastbourne, he was managing a restaurant by the age of nineteen. He later ran a successful home improvement business and worked in construction before a downturn in the building trade brought him to Sussex and a new career in computing. His talents were also reflected in the breadth of his hobbies and interests, from baking cakes to tending bonsai.

The second of two kidney transplants undertaken as a young man enabled Paul to enjoy a rich and fulfilled life, but he was again hit by health problems in recent years. Typically, he never let his illness get him down or dominate his outlook.

He was a gifted manager and a generous and popular colleague. He leaves many friends in IT Services and across the University who will remember his warmth, kindness and irrepressible humour.
