International students visit Mayor's parlour

A group of Sussex international students have spent an afternoon as special guests of the Mayor and Mayoress of Brighton and Hove.

Cllr Brian Fitch and his wife Nora hosted the group in the Mayor’s parlour to welcome them as international visitors to the city. The visit, which was organised by the International Student Support office, was the first of its kind for Sussex students, and a wide range of nationalities were represented

The Mayor and Mayoress shared some interesting historical tales about Brighton & Hove Town Hall, and the students were given the opportunity to hold the mayoral chains and maces. They were also treated to refreshments and there was then lots of posing for photographs to show family and friends back home.

The trip leader, Sophie van der Ham, said: “Our thanks go to the Mayoral couple and their staff who welcomed us so warmly and gave the students a real sense of British culture. The stories and insight provided were highly informative and interesting, and we were received with such hospitality.”

One of the students said: “It was a great day and I enjoyed [it] so much.”

The trip was free and it is hoped that it will be offered again in the new academic year, after the new Mayor has taken up office.
