Lynda’s descent raises cash for engineering students
A member of staff went beyond the call of duty by abseiling Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower to raise money for the University’s Formula Student Team.
Lynda Whitby-Eastwood successfully negotiated the 100-metre landmark on Friday (18 April), raising £555 for the team.
In her role as Lead Events Co-ordinator in Student Recruitment Services, Lynda has been helping a team of engineering students, Mobil1 Team Sussex, to publicise and raise money for their single-seat race car which will compete at this year’s international Formula Student competition.
Lynda said: “This group of young and talented students are currently building their car for the 2014 IMechE Formula Student Race in July.
“The energy and enthusiasm these students have shown and their determination to improve on the second national place that they earned in the Endurance Race in 2013 is typical of the students you find at Sussex.”
Her daring effort clearly inspired charitable donors, who continued to donate even after her target of £500 was met.
Lynda, who grew up in Portsmouth and is the daughter of a naval commander, was prepared for the abseil by the Universities Royal Naval Unit (URNU). She added that abseiling the naval city’s iconic tower for charity seemed appropriate.
