Sussex sustains financial support for students despite government funding changes

The University of Sussex has confirmed that it is not changing in any way the financial support package it provides to students, despite a recent reduction by the government in the national funding for scholarships.

UCAS recently wrote to applicants to UK universities explaining that government nationally is reducing the level of funding it provides for the ‘National Scholarship Programme’, which sets the minimum level of support that universities must provide to eligible students studying for undergraduate courses in the UK.

In response, the University has made clear that, irrespective of these reductions, it is committed to sustaining the financial support it provides under the First Generation Scholars (FGS) scheme.

Professor Clare Mackie, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), said: “We want to reassure all applicants to Sussex that the government changes have no impact on the funding we provide to our students.

“We are proud of the positive support we offer, which has enabled hundreds of students to study successfully at Sussex – and we will ensure that this continues to benefit students at Sussex in the future.”

The First Generation Scholars scheme at Sussex is more generous than the National Scholarship Programme and offers £5,000 over three years plus additional practical support. The FGS at Sussex provides support if a student’s household income is less than £42,611 per year. This support is in addition to any loans and grants from the Student Loans Company.
