Exercise challenge gives staff 10 days to ‘travel to Edinburgh’

Sussexsport is challenging teams of staff to walk, run, cycle and swim 698 miles in 10 days in January – the equivalent of travelling from Brighton to Edinburgh.

Brighton to Edinburgh mapThe route from Brighton to Edinburgh zig-zags across the UK with a number of stop-offs along the way.

Team members will get free access to sport and exercise facilities on campus for the duration of the challenge, which will see staff teams ‘journey’ northwards across the UK with virtual checkpoints along the way.

Karen Creffield, Head of Sport, said: "The route we have chosen is deliberately not a direct route but has lots of stop-offs along the way. This is to enable smaller teams or those who don’t want to commit to a big mileage to commit to a destination on route rather than reaching Edinburgh."

Each mile travelled will count towards the total and every 15 minutes spent on other sport or wellbeing activities, such as exercise classes or yoga, will also contribute one mile.

The Commit to Get Far contest – new for 2014 – has been created by the University’s sports service after the success of its annual, month-long summer challenge Commit to Get Fit, which encourages staff to get fit and active together.

At set points during the 10 days, Sussexsport will be asking teams for their current location on the challenge map, with prizes for those who respond within a specific timeframe. Look out for the ‘Where are you?’ posts on Sussexsport’s Facebook page.

To enter a team of two or more for Commit to Get Far, contact Sam Fuller s.n.fuller@sussex.ac.uk. Sam will require your team name, captain, and names and email addresses of all team members.

You can have as many people in your team as you like.

The challenge runs from 8 to 17 January and teams must enter before the start date.
