Students celebrate staff support for their learning with new awards

Twenty-eight members of staff have been declared the winners of the first ever Student-Led Teaching Awards, which celebrate the best teaching and support at Sussex.

LectureIn April, the University and the Students’ Union invited students to nominate staff in one of four categories. Nominations then went to each school’s student reps for a decision.

The full list of winners is as follows:

Outstanding or Innovative Undergraduate Teaching

Outstanding or Innovative Postgraduate Teaching

Outstanding or Innovative Assessment and Feedback

Outstanding Support for the Learning Experience of Students

Dr Janet Boddy, one of the winners of the award for Outstanding or Innovative Undergraduate Teaching, wrote on Twitter: “Means so much that it is nominated and voted by our wonderful students - thank you all!”

Professor Brian Hudson, a winner in the category for Outstanding Support for the Learning Experience of Students, tweeted: "News of my award lit up my day - I feel absolutely honoured!"

Juliette Cule, Education Officer in the Students’ Union, said: “The relationship between students and staff is a fundamental part of students’ time at university so I’m pleased to see them lead the way in celebrating the support they receive.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of our staff and I look forward to seeing the awards grow in future.”

Professor Clare Mackie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning), said: “I would like to congratulate all the winners on their awards, which are very well deserved.

“I would also like to congratulate Juliette and the USSU team for establishing these student-led Teaching Awards to recognise our dedicated and committed staff.”

The University will follow up with University awards at cluster level - with the proviso that only staff receiving student-led awards can progress to a University-level award, with the exception of Professional Services staff who support teaching within the schools.

These University awards will be announced annually in the autumn tem, following the summer student-led Teaching Awards.
