Professor Antony Carr, Director of the Genome Damage and Stability Centre (GDSC), and Professor Leon Lagnado, Director of Sussex Neuroscience, are among 44 new Academy Fellows who have been selected by a rigorous process of peer review.

Professor Carr has gained international renown for his research into the mechanism of the DNA damage and DNA replication checkpoints and how failed replication forks are restored. Professor Carr was instrumental in establishing the GDSC at Sussex, which is now one of the world’s leading centres of research into the mechanisms that maintain genome stability.

Professor Lagnado joined Sussex in 2013 to head Sussex Neuroscience, a major new initiative to establish the University as a centre of excellence in neuroscience. He joined from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he built an international reputation for his research in sensory neuroscience.

Their elections mean that Sussex (including Brighton and Sussex Medical School) now counts among its faculty 11 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences are elected for outstanding contributions to the advancement of medical science, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare.

Professor Sir John Tooke, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said: “The Academy of Medical Sciences represents the excellence and diversity of medical science in the UK, and this is evident in the broad range of expertise demonstrated by this year’s new Fellows.

“Their election is a much deserved honour for the outstanding achievements they have shown throughout their careers. I know they will contribute greatly to the Academy, and I am delighted to welcome them all to the Fellowship.”

The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on 2 July.
