The award, previously known as the Institute Exceptional Achievement Award, is given “for exceptional commitment and service to the Institute and its aims and objectives”.

Professor Atherton, who took up the post of Professor of Control Engineering at the University of Sussex in 1980, served as President of the Institute of Measurement and Control in 1990.

The Institute promotes the professional excellence of engineers and technologists in the automation, instrumentation and control industries.

Professor Atherton’s major research interests are in non-linear control theory, computer-aided control system design, simulation and target tracking.

He has written four books, is a co-author of two others and has published more than 350 papers in journals and conference proceedings.

Professor Atherton will be presented with the Don Tallantire Award at the Institute of Measurement and Control’s Thomson Lecture and Learned Awards Evening, to be held on 23 October at the Royal Society in London.
