Sussex ranked in world’s top 2% and UK top 20

The University of Sussex has been ranked in the top two per cent of universities in the world.

THE world uni rankingsThe 2013-14 Times Higher Education World University Rankings – published in the magazine on Thursday (3 October) – place Sussex at 17th in the UK, 48th in Europe and 121st in the world.

Sussex was also ranked in the UK’s top 10 universities, and 60th in the world, for the influence of its research.

This looks at the role of the University in spreading new knowledge and ideas by capturing the number of times Sussex’s published work is cited by scholars globally. According to the THE, this is “the flagship, the single most influential of the 13 indicators” that they use to put together the rankings.

Similarly, the University scores well for its international outlook, placed 54th in the world for this measure. The ranking is based on the proportion of overseas students and staff the University has on campus, as well as the proportion of papers published in collaboration with international authors.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, said: "It is good to see Sussex recognised once again as one of the very top institutions in the UK and the world.

“The University was founded with a firmly international outlook and attracts staff and students from over 120 different countries across the world. Nearly a third of staff come from outside the UK.

“Our research tackles major world issues, with leading areas of expertise such as climate change, corruption and development studies. We have extensive links with many institutions worldwide, such as Peking University, National Taiwan University and the Harvard-Sussex programme.

“These well-established international academic connections put us in a strong position to further develop our reputation in an increasingly competitive global higher education environment.”

The rankings are the most widely recognised and widely used among international students, research has found.
