Thousands of Sussex students get to know their flatmates

Sussex students have responded positively to a series of residence welcome sessions in Dine Central over the last few weeks, with one student commenting: “Good food, good people, good vibes, good music, good atmosphere and good brownie”.

Residences Welcome 1All 4,650 students living in University-managed accommodation were invited to attend one of a series of residence welcome events.

Residences Welcome 2 The 16 residence welcome events are hosted jointly by Residential Services and Sussex Food.

All 4,650 students living in University-managed accommodation were invited to attend one of the welcome events, which are hosted jointly by Residential Services and Sussex Food.

Dean Spears, Housing Services Manager, said: “The purpose of the event is to encourage residents to get to know their neighbours, and become familiar with the range of residential student support on offer.”

And it seems to have worked. Reece Woolmore, a Park Village resident studying English, said: “The events provide a good opportunity for students to get know people from your house and flat more.”

Will Appleyard, another Park Village resident, added that the event was “particularly good for meeting people that you probably wouldn’t bump into on a daily basis”.

The events have been organised for the first time this year as part of the induction process, in response to feedback received from students via the annual residences’ exit survey.

The two sessions on 26 September were at record capacity, with 450 new residents from East Slope and Brighthelm tucking in to some SussexFood street food. They followed the first two sessions on 25 September, for students living off campus in University-managed accommodation.

Each session features a welcome from a senior member of the Residential Services team and an introduction from a member of Sussex Food, with other members of staff and Residential Advisers also on hand.

As well as enjoying a free meal (jointly funded by Residential Services and Sussex Food), residents have been given maps showing where to eat on campus and have been introduced to the new newspaper, Foodie, which SussexFood is launching on campus.

A total of 16 sessions are taking place over a period of three weeks. The final events will take place on Tuesday (8 October) for all postgraduates living on campus.
