Megan Roodt, a first-year geography student, won first prize – £100 worth of Sainsburys vouchers – in the 2013 ‘My Welcome Week’ blog competition.

The competition, judged by Student Recruitment Services (SRS), invited all new students who arrived at the University in September to share their memories and experiences throughout Welcome Weekend (14-15 September) and Induction Week (16-20 September).

Summarising her first week at Sussex, Megan wrote: “All in all, it’s been an intense but great first week and I’m really excited for the next three years that lie ahead.

“I feel a lot more prepared for what’s coming up and the University, its staff and fellow students have had a big role in accomplishing that.”

Nathan Catt, Events & Campus Tour Coordinator in SRS, said: “Megan structured her blogs very well, gave some great advice to current and future students and covered a huge range of topics eloquently.”

A second prize, three months membership of Sussexsport, was awarded to psychology undergraduate and international student Charlotte Kvie.

Charlotte’s blog included posts about ‘freshers flu’, her favourite Norwegian comedy band Ylvis, and a warning to other students to watch out for seagulls after being attacked by one in Brighton.

She also shared her experience as an international student at Sussex. In one post, Charlotte wrote: “Luckily I was able to understand almost everything the lecturers said and I didn´t feel that I was having any big problems with language just yet. I am sure it will be harder when we have to write essays, but as long as I keep practicing, I’m pretty sure it will be ok.”

Hundreds of staff and students followed the blogs, which were posted on SPLASH, the University’s blogging platform, with the tag ‘My Welcome Week 2013’.

Nathan said: “We hope that all blog entrants will continue blogging and sharing some of their experiences of Sussex life throughout their degrees.”
