Take part in graduation

Staff are being asked to take part in the summer graduation ceremonies on 8-11 July, in the Brighton Dome.

The graduation ceremonies are key events in the University calendar, and this year will be extra special as Sussex celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first graduation ceremony in 1964.

Professional Services staff are being asked to volunteer to help with tasks such as robing graduands, and teaching faculty are all invited to take part in the faculty procession.

Professional Services staff work in a wide range of roles: robing graduands, ensuring that they go across the stage at the correct point, seating guests, handing out tickets and programmes, as well as undertaking all manner of administrative duties and public-facing roles.

Graduand being robedStaff work at the graduation ceremonies in a variety of roles, such as robing graduands.

You can find out more about these roles and volunteer to help at the Graduation web pages.

Staff volunteering to work for a whole day will be provided with a free lunch at Pinocchio’s Italian restaurant, and refreshments will be available all day from the on-site staff room.

Clare Rogers, Postgraduate Co-ordinator in the School of Global Studies, has volunteered to help at the graduation ceremonies for a number of years. She says: “Graduation is the time we see the fruits of our labours: students whom we’ve known since they first came to Sussex receive their degrees.

“Graduation is a celebration not only of their triumphs over setbacks but the achievements of all students.  It is also a celebration of Sussex and Sussex values.

“That feeling of delight has never deserted me and I’m back every year for more.  With colleagues from all over the University, we aim to give our graduands the best of send-offs and to leave them with the memory of an extraordinary day.”

Kristina Ford, Academic Development and Quality Enhancement Officer , took part for the first time this January. She says: “I personally found it a great privilege to participate in the celebration of so many students’ incredible achievements. It was an amazingly uplifting experience witnessing the joy and pride of friends and family as their loved ones received their awards.”

Members of teaching faculty can sign up to be part of the faculty procession.
