Formula Student is an international competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which challenges university students to design, build, develop, and compete as a team with a single-seat racing car.

The car was launched at an event held in the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA) Creativity Zone on campus on Tuesday (28 May). Special guests included Professor Diane Mynors, Head of the School of Engineering and Informatics, and Dr Johnson Beharry VC, one of Mobil 1 Team Sussex’s patrons.

Team Sussex consists of a diverse combination of both third- and fourth-year automotive, mechanical and electrical engineering students, as well as a small number of product designers and media students. The team has grown in popularity over the last year with nearly 50 students involved in the project compared to just 27 in 2012.

As part of their entry Team Sussex have chosen 61 as the team’s car number to represent the year the University received its Royal Charter (1961). The number features on the nose cone and both sides of the bodywork of the finished racing car, and will also appear in the pit at the Silverstone motor racing circuit where the competition is held.

This year Team Sussex, who will race against more than 100 other entries, have set their sights on a top 5 finish among all UK teams in the competition – which they hope will place them in the top 20 overall.

Formula Student 2013 will take place at the Silverstone circuit from 3-7 July.
