Sussex postgraduate’s musical gets UK debut

A postgraduate student from the University of Sussex will see her musical come to life this weekend when it makes its UK debut at an international youth arts festival in London.

Kesho Amahoro (Peace Tomorrow)Anna Rusbatch, who is currently completing a Masters degree in Music and Sonic Media, co-wrote the production Kesho Amahoro (Peace Tomorrow), which will feature at the 2013 International Youth Arts Festival in Kingston.

Set in the Benaco refugee camp in northern Tanzania during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Kesho Amahoro tells the real-life story of Esperance, a young refugee, and her siblings. Determined to stay with each other, the children join the Kasulu street kids, a resilient group of youngsters, and together they face incredible setbacks and deep heartbreak, but still manage to look positively to the future.

The musical will bring together a cast of 100 young performers from Braeburn High School in Nairobi, Kenya and Downs Junior School in Brighton, where Anna is a music teacher.

Anna is also the co-founder of Chicken Knitters Theatre Company in Kenya, which aims to create innovative musicals that raise awareness of social issues, historical events and true stories.

Three performances of Kesho Amahoro will be given at the festival, running from today (Friday 26 July) to Sunday (28 July). Profits from ticket sales will be donated to international charity Save the Children and the UNHCR to support refugee children in Syria.
