A table tennis table has been installed outside Northfield residences.

The new table was bought by Sussex using money donated by former students and was installed during the Christmas break.

This is the third outdoor table fitted on campus in the past year, after two were placed near Swanborough residences in May 2012. These were provided by the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA), who chose Sussex following a competitive bid process.

Bats and balls can be borrowed from accommodation offices.

Students and staff can also play indoor table tennis on campus, with six tables in the Sport Centre and eight in Falmer House (also donated by ETTA).

Student Sally Hughes, captain of Sussex’s table tennis team, said that the tables had helped to spark a “table tennis revolution” among students.

Indeed, in the three years since it formed, the club has grown from just four members to well over 100.

Sussex’s women’s team are placed first and the men’s team are currently second in their respective British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues, with the men pushing for promotion to the universities Premier League next year.

The club has also benefited from top training. The University’s coach, Tim Holtam, was named Coach of the Year at the City Sport & Physical Activity Awards 2012 run by Brighton & Hove City Council.
